Driving to the Centre of the Earth, 2012
Silent video, modified monitor, latex, PVC pipe, paint
6 minute loop, installed in a hole in the wall, 10 x 10 x 35 cm
Driving to the Centre of the Earth was originally installed at the end of a long shaft “drilled” into the gallery wall at PICA. At once science-fiction and social commentary, the work evokes both the wonder of storybook discovery and the everyday reality of Perth’s current car and mining driven climate.
It’s a hypnotic work. The steady driving moves at the slow pace of the Sydney harbour tunnel at peak hour and the woman behind the wheel takes occasional sips of coffee from a travel cup – it’s going to be a long drive.
